America- what is must-see/must-do for the visitor

What does a tourist going to America really have to do/see if they have say 3weeks. Thinking of going for a few weeks in early autumn

Northern New England (Maine, Vermont, New Hampshire) has the best, brightest, and earliest of the Fall colours if you're going in order to view the foliage (aka 'leaf peeping').

The US is a big place. Most of us have never seen all of it.

You want cowboys? Go West young man! Montana, Texas, Wyoming...

How about some Southern Hospitality? Virginia, West Virginia, Georgia, Tennessee...

I suggest Wikipedia's entries for Regions (Northeast, Southwest, Pacific Northwest etc.) as well as the write-ups on each of the states.

I was going to respond but realized my idea of tourism is probably different...
- get there and walk around large shopping or business areas aimlessly
- find locals to hang out with -- plan to do something average people in the city do: go to a sporting event, or a club, or a concert, or whatever's going on.
- find local food to eat, that isn't chain crap and isn't over-priced shit
- party with locals
- find some historical place to buy souvenirs for friends and family
- find some posh shopping center to round out the souvenir buying

East coast must go to New York take the Staten Island ferry great view of Manhattan and Liberty. Obviously do all the touristy things Times Square etc. Shopping, Saks fifth Ave and Bloomingdales. If you like Deli food Carnegies is the oldest and probably best in New York, for a steak Ruth´s Chris its a chain all over he states but it really is a great resturant, Smith & Wollensky's expensive but another top steak resturant.

A wee bit of advice if you go up to Boston or New England area and find the urge to go to Niagara Falls it is not really worth the trip, will take too much of your trip time up.

I know more about the west coast for me the most amazing spot ever is the Grand Canyon If you have chance you must go. If not this time make it an ambition, seriously it is a place everyone should go to at least once you will shit yourself. If you do go to the west coast let us know I can mark your card better.

Oh there is a place in L.A. called the House of Blues it´s a great night, I know there are other locations throughout the States so if you find one on your travels it´s always worth checking out whos playing. John Bellushi and Dan Akroyd own them and play them often it really is a fun night.

Erm, considering that it's in upper New York State on the Canadian border (475 miles away from Boston), I'd say either fly there to begin with or skip it.

What can you see in Boston? Me! Want to try a New England home cooked meal? How many are coming to the US, just you? We are a family of six, but by then one will be in California and another might be in Vancouver.

Sheesh, this place is a mess. Now where did I put the Hoover?

I love the South West personally. Northern New Mexico for is a favourite for me, Taos, New Mexico in particular is a beautiful little town. Colorado Rockies are also superb. Grand Canyon is nice for a look.

I have family in Brooklyn and they say New York is a must see. I hate L.A with passion personally so I wouldn't suggest there.
