I have also been to a couple of real out and out rebel bands in noirthern Ireland and I hated the music and the agressive vibe. Stuff like Sam song I really detest because it is just childish and makes light of killing. I have heard some superb old fasioned traditional solo sung Irish rebel songs of real musical quality in a wee country bar in bandit country. If they were all like that I would be more into them.
i think one of the best is Tiocfaidh ár lá (no not the sam song) the one about the farmer who leaves his life behind to join the 'glory' of the IRA but soon realises it wasn't what it was cracked up to be, i think this reflects what happened to a lot of recruits

"The recruiting sergeant told me boys, how army life is fine
But he did not mention the mortar bombs or those bloody Claymore Mines!"

EDIT: its also known as the merry ploughboy

I have a huge selection of Republican music, some of it bought straight from Sinn Fein shops, and I play my music daily, whether at home or in the car, but I don't agree with it at Celtic games for no other reason than the club don't want it.

I don't see where people would have a problem with that.

Same Here....Though i do think it is a bit harsh that people get chucked out for one mention of something like the RA. As the older generations will have been singing them for years in the Jungle, then suddenly have to stop. Maybe 2 warnings then out.

I'm with you rabt1888, I'm not Catholic, but like the rebel songs lol... I only really listen to them in the house and on my ipod.. I've been to a CATB and to a Wakes concert before. I like the rebel songs because they speak of fighting oppression etc.
Boys of the Old Brigade is probably my favourite. I also like the the ten brave men and fuck the British Army, I love the start of that. I also like the flute and drum bands. I look for any excuse to post this video... Speakers up bhoys and ghirls..

yep war songs that reflect the sadness of war are the best ones. Dont really like the agressive defiant ones. Its the same with remebrance. Best if it is basically anti-war.

I am pretty chuffed with the response to this thread, I am really impressed with the way the question was fielded by all who answered.

I wasnt wanting to start a debate over the morality of the IRA or anything like it, and I am glad to hear there are a lot like me. Like the music, but inderstand that it is not at home in Celtic Park.

My question was answered !!

irish music is best, its a well known fact

the music and the lyrics of the the rebel songs are all top notch, singin can be a bit dodgy though

but a love the fureys and christy moore just as much as i love the wolfetones its not just about the IRA for me

i guess i just feel a can identify with the ideas and i like the idea of struggling for what is right
