Over 21s Policy

Depending on where you live, and your age, I'm sure you will be familiar with being turned away from licensed premises with the line "over 21s only".

Is this legal? Is it not age discrimination?

The argument for it is usually 'its the landlord's premises he can serve who he likes', but surely it's as bad as the "No blacks, No dogs, No Irish" days?

The usual bollocks that they excuse themselves with is "under 21s cause more trouble". Now from my experience, both as a customer and a barman, that is completely untrue a it is generally the "adults" who get into fights. But even if we were to pretend that "because of a minority of under-21-year-olds, only those over 21 are permitted entry" - surely this is as bad as saying no Muslims are allowed because a minority are terrorists? Only using that to illustrate my point btw, I know Muslims aren't supposed to drink!!

Personally, anywhere that says Over 21s gets an automatic boycott from me. For example there is a pub local to me that I used to drink in very often, even from the age of 17 as I used to go there with my dad to watch games. I continued drinking there regularly until around 19, when I went in there with a couple of friends one night. The barmaid asked us all for ID, I was quite surprised as you'd think she'd recognise me, but anywho we all showed her our IDs as we were all 18+. She then told us it was Over 21s. Now even though I know I'd be fine to go in there by myself, or with my dad, I make a clear point of not going there and discouraging anyone else from going there. Even when I turn 21 I will avoid the place as personally I think it's just bang out of order.

So - what do you think of the Over 21 "rule"? My instinct tells me that anyone over 21 is going to support it, which is a bit selfish but there you go.

Living in Ireland, the only places you'd see that are Over 21 are in Dublin, I've even seen Over 24 signs but in fairness the bouncers let you in anyway - they just fall back on that if they don't like the look of you

i have no problems with it. and yes, i'd be aloud to drink in those pubs :P
I personally think its not a bad idea, i don't think its trouble related i think its perhalps attitude related, like 18 year olds are more likely to make an arse of them selfs and perhalps disturb the rest of the people there.
and for the older one's its maybe better to have a few more "mature" places to go.
Not too sure there is such as thing as age discrimination, afterall your aloud to higher people because their either young or old.

pub near me was ment to be a 21's but they never botherd with it and i thought great. keep the wee fannies out. which before it was ment to be a 21's is what it was - full of fannies.

when i was 18 i used to get all sorts of problems getting into pubs as i always looked quite youn g so i can sympathise with you. i ended up having to get a passport just to get into pubs that had an 18 limit.

they had a few places that were 21 but u just had to deal with it and get on with it im afraid.and if im being honest now i would prefere to go them as im 30 :P

its nowhere near as bad as that mate discriminating against someone because of their age isn't the same as being racist.

the owners have the right to refuse anyone entry just like you have the right to refuse people entry into your house. some bars dont let people in because their not good looking FFS!

i hate bars like that anyway, ful of wankers normally much rather sit in a nice bar with my mates and talk shite

even happens in belfast buddy. i never go to those sort of places, i'm more at home sitting listening to a band supping on guinness all nght but my GF says that at some clubs she goes to the bouncers check out people in the queue and if they dont like the look of anyone they'll just say "sorry its not your night". dont think i could handle the rejection, quite easily offended

I hate getting rejected for shitty reasons, 2 weeks ago on a friday night me and mates were over at his house having a few beers then we thought lets go in town this was around midnight, so were off in total casual clothing and we go up to 1 bar they say we are tooooo casual, for fuck sake, try another few bars on the street they deny us again, then the fucking police say to us your not getting in anywhere round thse streets yous are too agressive and offensive, and we just got in town, not a fucking swear word was said, fucking absolutly pissed me off i even questioned where they got there sources from and they said they got complains. then next week on friday again i went to the same bar in total casual gear again and the bouncer goes this will be the only time you get in like that so i walked in and walked out

Ah Bollocks, I'm going to Dublin for a weekend to celebrate my 18th Birthday.
Yes the over 21 rule is unfair, just because people are older doesn't mean they aren't going to cause trouble.

Bit off topic but there's 2 or 3 stores in Glasgow that won't employ you unless you're good looking enough.
