Three teenagers were sentenced to a total of at least 44 years on Monday for murdering a father-of-three who died in an attack outside his home.

Garry Newlove, 47, was set upon after he confronted the group of youths who had vandalised a mechanical digger and another vehicle in Warrington, Cheshire last August.

He died in hospital two days later from head injuries after being kicked like a football, police said.

Adam Swellings, 19, Stephen Sorton, 17, and Jordan Cunliffe, 16, were found guilty of his murder at Chester Crown Court last month.

Two other teenagers, aged 17 and 15, were acquitted after a trial lasting several weeks.

Swellings, who had earlier pleaded guilty to manslaughter, was sentenced to a minimum term of 17 years.

The teenager had only been released from custody for an assault a few hours before the attack.

Sorton was sentenced to a minumum of 15 years and Cunliffe to a minimum of 12 years.

Newlove's death sparked a wave of emotion and public anger.

It also led to the area's police chief calling for the legal drinking age in Britain to be raised to 21 to stem anti-social and violent behaviour.

Tributes were lead by his youngest daughter, Amy, 12, who wrote a letter written at his hospital bedside.

In it, she described her father as "the best dad anyone can ask for".

Newlove, a sales manager, had met police three months before his murder to discuss setting up a Neighbourhood Watch scheme after a spate of youth crime in the area.

His wife, Helen said the family was devastated.

"The light has gone out of our lives," she said after the trial. "It's like a piece of our jigsaw has been lost forever.

Detective Inspector Geoff Elvey, of Cheshire police, said after the trial the murder was a "vicious, senseless, and violent attack by a group of cowardly young men".

that bus shelter must be the nicest in ayr now

i live on a street with loads of old people sombody had to do somthing but they might not have been total shit bags it could have went so wrong that guy stood up for his street and property i mean i was no angel when i was a boy but if any adult came out and moved uson it was a bit of lip and we were off

I'm no too bad where I live and get on fine with the wee mob, but in other areas I see they run amok and adults are actually terrified to step outside. The thing is that most of these wee cunts get away with their antics and there are no reprisals. They have been roaming the streets from a young age and know nothing else. The parents have let them down and they have grew up not giving a fuck. To address this is hard and its a situation that the governments have failed to sort out. Parents should be scrutinised more harshly, and it pains me to say that as usually I'm against the authorities sticking their noses into family life. But if parents are big enough to have children then they should be responsible for the upbringing of them. You see kids as young as 6-7 running around at 11pm. WTF is that about? We can't just cull a generation due the failures of the generation before. These kids are usually victims of shitty upbringing, gang divisions and drink/ drugs. Until we sort out these issues the problem will only get worse.

The excuse the young cunts make that they have nothing to do doesn't hold water with me though. Whatever happened to 20 a side at the local fitba pitch. Even a game of comby or world cuppy if there wasn't enough bodies.

Its a fucked up situation that wont be rectified any time soon.
