THE team assessing Glasgow's bid to host the Commonwealth Games started work today by visiting most of the main venues.
The five-man Evaluation Commission led by chairman John Tierney of the Cook Islands and Mike Hooper, chief executive of the Commonwealth Games Association, praised the city as "wonderful and exciting".
Today they checked out Celtic Park where the opening ceremony will be held, Hampden, Ibrox, Tollcross pool, the site of the new national arena and velodrome in the East End and Strathclyde Country Park.
Visits to other venues including the games village, Scotstoun, the Armadillo and Kelvingrove are scheduled over the next couple of days along with 20 hours of presentations on everything from the venues to security and transport.
They will also hear from figures such as Strathclyde Police Chief Constable Willie Rae and council chief executive George Black.
Mr Tierney said: "We understand just how important it is to the people of Glasgow and Scotland to bring these Games to this wonderful and exciting city."
He said the commission would look at legacy, political, legal and Customs issues as well as the venues and village arrangements.
It has already undertaken a review of the Glasgow bid document which was handed over at a ceremony in London last month.
The Games officials arrived in Glasgow direct from its rival bidder, the Nigerian capital Abuja.
They said it was a city of "promise" which showed "youthful enthusiasm", and Mr Tierney added: "It has a wide array of sports and entertainment issues, it has drive and ambition for infrastructure growth and growing domestic community."
However, they remained non-committal over Nigeria's claim it should host the Games because they haven't yet been held in Africa.
Mr Hooper said: "I think you're getting into things that are not of the realm of this commission.
"This is a technical evaluation and these are political issues that our constituencies may take into consideration."
Despite the officials' claims about Abuja, the Foreign Office issued advice on Friday that the Niger Delta is no longer safe for British nationals after a spate of kidnappings.
The Commission wraps up its visit on Wednesday and its report will be published on September 9.
The winner will be declared after a secret ballot of the Games Federation's 71 members on November 9 in after a presentation in Colombo, Sri Lanka.

Brilliant news (Im from Edinburgh) - this should make sure that there are top class facilities in Scotland, something that has been long overdue
