Freeing up memory...

Right I'm not too good on computers and I was wondering what the best way is to free up memory or whatever so that I can get the computer working faster? Any particular methods which are good or any files I should delete or programmes etc... I always use that defragment thing and the disk cleanup too but it doesn't seem to make much of a difference any tips would be appreciated

If you have anything like Windows Media Player, Msn, Sykpe, FM or any big game and you don't use them just delete them all you have to do is download it again if you need it. Also delete stuff like Pictures, Videos, Songs if you don't need them mate.

Uninstall programs you are not using. Programs that are running in the background, like winamp agent, quicktime all use memory even if the program is not open. Post a screen shot of your taskmanager and I can tell you if you have spyware or viruses.

Ctrl+Alt+Delete should bring it up. It shows all the processes running on your machine and how much memory they are taking up.

I would like a screenshot of the Processes tab and the performance tabs

BTW, What version of windows are you running? What CPU and how much RAM

I dont believe in these tweak programs, tried them and they dont solve the problem long term.

The main memory hogs are viruses, spyware & unused programs that sit in the background waiting for something to happen. These need memory and CPU time to run, resources being used for no good reason.

The first two can be solved by installig AVG & Spybot & Ad-aware. The third is just un-installing programs you dont use and check the process list for other background tasks and figure whats running them and decide if you need them running all the time.

Once you do that and you still need more memory, then its time to decide if you need to increase your memory physically.

How much RAM you got?

If you have 256 MB of RAM or less, I would consider getting 1 GB of RAM. Which you can get fairly cheaply. You can just open your case up and take out the old RAM stick and sticking in the new one. All pretty easy. Like inserting a sim card into your mobile its that easy.
