Poles forced to flee home
A TERRIFIED Polish couple and their two-year-old son have been left with nowhere to live after they were forced to flee their Waterside home at the weekend following a horror race attack.
In one of the worst attacks on the non national community in the city, three masked men armed with iron bars and a hatchet burst into a house on Emerson Street and threatened the occupants before smashing it up.
The young family and four other male adults living at the address were in bed asleep when the racist thugs struck shortly after 3 a.m. on Saturday.
During the attack, the terrified victims were forced to barricade themselves into an upstairs bedroom in a desperate bid to escape injury.
As our disturbing photographs show, the crazed gang smashed up the kitchen, living room, bathroom and stairs in an attack that lasted up to 10 minutes.
It is also believed that they used the hatchet to try and force entry to the bedroom where their victims were hiding in terror.
Katrina Kordula, of the Polish Welfare Association described the attack as the worst she has ever seen.
A PSNI spokesperson confirmed that detectives are probing a racist motive for the attack.
It is believed the victims have been living in the city for some months and work for a local employer.
They are now staying in an undisclosed location and are too afraid to speak of their ordeal.
Ms. Kordula condemned the attack, adding: "This is the worst I have seen in my two and a half years with the Polish Welfare Association.
"This family has been left very badly traumatised by the attack. They has lost everything and do not know why this has happened to them."
Ms. Kordula has spoken to community leaders in the area in a bid to prevent other non nationals from being targeted.
She said there were reports from some locals that a non national was seen in the area wearing a Celtic football top.
She stressed that no one living at the home targeted had a Celtic shirt.
Up until the attack, the occupants had lived in peace alongside their neighbours, she said.
The Mayor of Derry, Lynn Fleming said last night she was disappointed by the attack which she condemned.
Ironically, Colr. Fleming is to hold a welcome and advice evening this week for non nationals living and working in the city.
The Mayor said the vast majority of people in the city are welcoming to people who have chosen to settle in the city.
"This is a terrible attack and my thoughts are with the young family and the other occupants of the house. I hope something like this does not reoccur."
She added: "The people who carried this out, for whatever reason, obviously know who they are targeting.
"I would like to ask them what they think they have to fear from the non national community.
"If there is anything that we as a Council can do to help these people we would be only too glad to help."
Detectives want anyone who noticed the men or a suspicious vehicle in the immediate area to contact them on 0845 600 8000, or 'Crimestoppers' on freephone 0800 555111.
The Polish Welfare Association has launched an appeal to help the victims of the attack.
She said they are in desperate need of clothes, toys and financial assistance to them get back on their feet.
