SPL 08/09 it’s here!

SPL 08/09 it’s here!

After last seasons roller-coaster ride what does this season have in store?

The SPL kicks off in earnest today, although Celtic will have to wait 24 hours to unfurl the championship flag which took a herculean effort from all concerned to retain.

It would be naive to believe that Celtic could walk it this season but with Rangers early exit from Europe, the devastating financial implications and their squad full of ageing journeyman, this season already has an air of inevitability about it.

Celtic are light years in front of Rangers and the rest of the SPL´s paupers, both on and off the pitch. This gap is now likely to widen further over the coming weeks and months.

We have been boosted by the signings of Georgios Samaras, Patrick McCourt, the imminent arrival of midfield wonder kid Marc Crosas and a plethora of young talent now looking to kick on from an impressive pre-season. With only Stephen Pressley and the hapless Adam Virgo leaving the club, so far this summer’s activity has only made an already strong squad even stronger.

Already the faithful have reasons to be excited about going into the coming season. However Celtic are still keen to add more quality in the remaining weeks of this window and along with keeping hold of top stars like Aiden McGeady and Artur Boruc the future for Celtic is looking bright.

Now all that remains is for the first ball of the 2008/09 season to be kicked in anger which will allow Celtic to once again prove their credentials as the top dog of Scottish football.
