Strike threat may delay SPL start

<!-- S BO --> <!-- S IIMA --> <table align="right" border="0" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" width="226"> <tbody><tr><td> Scottish referees have yet to agree a new pay deal

</td></tr> </tbody></table> <!-- E IIMA --> <!-- S SF -->The start of the Scottish Premier League this weekend could be delayed because of a strike threat from the country's Referees' Association.
A senior referee told BBC Scotland there was a real threat of a strike as the SRA have yet to agree a financial deal ahead of the new season.
The referees met with the SPL on Monday without agreement and have further meetings planned for later in the week.
"We expect the matter to be resolved soon," said an SPL spokesman. <!-- E SF -->
According to reports in Scotland, the referees have been promised £600 a match - which is an increase of £25 - but they are holding out for £800 immediately, rising to £1000.
In contrast, Premier League referees in England receive an annual retainer of £33,000 plus £300 per match in fees.
"I have spoken to a number of referees and the threat of strike action is certainly a real one," BBC Scotland's Brian McLauchlin told Radio 5 Live.
"They are looking for parity with other comparable leagues in Europe, like Norway, Holland, Belgium and Greece.

</td> <td class="sib606">
</td> </tr> </tbody></table> <!-- E IBOX --> "In Norway, referees receive £1200 per game, in Scotland they get £575. The Scottish referees do not want what they get in Norway but what they do want is the SPL to make them a reasonable offer. "They train two or three nights a week, they do workshops, as well as going to clubs and giving up their time free of charge.
"They want the SPL to be realistic but they have been offered an increase of £25, to the referees that is just not acceptable."
And Jim Trainer, head of sport at the Daily Record, says that the row is not just all about money.

Oh, really Jim? Well then, please share your marvellous insights with us once more. Fucking imbecile - he'll be muttering on about referees getting more respect, blah blah blah. The standard in this country is an absolute disgrace - a RAISE?! Don't make me fucking laugh...

Their pay should be performance based anyway. What's the point of paying some bigot 600 notes for effecting the outcome of crucial games with blatant cheating, such as the Dundee Utd game at Ipox? All it does is send the wrong message yet again and show the SPL for what they are....complete amateurs.

There should be a system in place whereby the member clubs vote for a referee's appraisal committee of 5 members who would meet on a weekly basis to impartially asses the performances of the refs. If a certain ref was found to be derelict in his duty or underperforming then he shouldn't be paid the full amount of money, simple as that.

The same should apply if we go down the road of employing professional refs. There are too many who are simply not up to the job.

Exactly. If they are wanting a grand a week on top of their actual salary from their real jobs then they and the assistant linesmen should be judged on marks out of ten for their performance and that should equate to a proportion of say £1500 which they would earn if they got a 10 rating.

Kenny Clark was on the radio saying they didn't want to earn as much as the footballers but there are plenty of players at St Mirren, Hamilton, Motherwell etc who are on 500 a week or less.
