me definetly but it will not happen anytime soon as the smaller teams always look forward to the OF cash and setanta want the OF derby as many times as possible in a season as its probably their main attraction

We have been increasing and decreasing the number of teams in switzerland in the past and it didn't really work out. the reason is simple: if the league gets increased, more diddy teams will play in the prem. more gretnas, st mirren and even worse teams can't be the solution. from a financial aspect, I guess those teams couldn't even afford playing in the top league. don't know hows the situation in scotland, but I don't assume their stadiums fulfil the qualifications for a serviceable spl stadium.

The bigger league would create more meaningless games every week and what players would want to sign for us to go and play the likes of Dundee and St Johnstone

would love to see a 16 team league if there were 16 teams good enough for the SPL. would rather have an 11 team league so one team gets a week off which would help with the fixture congestion

A 14-team league, playing all opponents thrice, would fit into the schedule (increase from 38 games to 39) - but could be unfair as, for example, Rangers and Celtic would play twice at one of their grounds, and once at the other. A 16-team league, playing all opponents twice, would result in a reduction from 38 to 30 matches. It would also replace many high-profile derbies and clashes between bigger clubs, with smaller teams. As a result, clubs would experience severe financial losses which might make a 16-team format unviable.
Leagues of 18 teams (34 matches) or 20 teams (38 matches, as currently) would not face the massive fall in fixture numbers of the 16 team league. However, the increase in matches versus smaller clubs and the huge increase in 'meaningless' mid-table games, might still impact attendances and finance.

16 teams would be a lot better IMO. It would be better for all concerned.

Celtic/Rangers - Better for CL preperation.

Hibs/Dundee Utd/Hearts etc - Close the gap slightly on the OF as they would play them less. Also more chance of extra European places with a 16 team league.

Bottom half teams - Would be more exciting for the fans if 3 teams were going down.

It wouldn't suit the current SPL teams due to lesser crowds over a season and that's why they won't vote for it which is a shame as it would help Scottish football in general. To think of all the extra young Scottish players getting the experience of playing at Celtic Park, Greyskull and the better SPL grounds in general can only be a good thing.

Because it would only give 30 games. I think a country's top league must have more than thirty.
