what did I just say? He's extremely talented. Im not flippant about the skill involved at all, it's immense. But its a semantic point - the guy strolls around and swings a carbon fibre club around once in a while he cant seriously be called an 'athlete'. Chess takes incredible ability, Im sure the tiddily winks and sharpshooting champions have incredible ability and talent but I can't call them 'athletes' with a straight face either. Hell, Cricket's REALLY pushing it.

Am i mistaken or did you just compare golf to chess?
'strolling around swinging a carbon fibre clus' is extremely flippant. Woods is a well oiled athlete that has been training to be the best in the world since he was in nappies.

yes I compared it to chess. You dont need to be an athlete to do either. And my description is accurate whether its flippant or not, thats what they do - they walk a couple of minutes then stand still for 10 minutes then swing a 8 ounce carbon fibre club once. That might take a great deal of skill & talent but it does not take a great athlete.

Athlete:A person trained to compete in sports
Sport:An athletic activity requiring skill or physical prowess and often of a competitive nature as racing, baseball, tennis, golf, wrestling, boxing etc
Your opinion does not mean its not a sport sorry bud.
It's hard to say who's the best when you comare lots of sports but he is up with the best no doubt.

didn't say it did, mate. Im merely stating that IN MY OPINION, calling a guy who plays the sport of golf the greatest athlete in the world is completely absurd. And tbh, i cant see what physical prowess golf demands other than superb technique. It's something real athletes do to RELAX and rest. I suppose if enough people start watching tidilywinks that'll become a sport too. Thats basically what constitutes a sport, isn't it - a competitive activity that enough people watch to warrant televising/reporting on. Totally arbitrary.

Lance Armstrong - the guy won 7 consectutive tour de france's between 1999 -2005. The tour is 2,200 miles long over 23days.
Thats some achievement
Plus the fact he was diagnosed with cancer 1996!
Although Cycling is not the most popular sport (im first to admit, I have never nor never would watch it) you have got to hand it to the man!
Tiger is gifted, yes no doubt, but come on, see my sig...

No mate .I gave you the definition of sport. It has nothing to do with TV or reporting and it was also a thread about the greatest sportsman.
Out of interest what sports do you play?

football with my mates and boxing at a club
your definition was a competitive activity involving physical prowess. Darts physical prowess? Snooker physical prowess? Golf physical prowess? Naw mate. Competitive eating involves far more physical prowess than those (thats not a joke, btw). Tiddly winks at least as much as darts. The only thing that distinguishes Golf, snooker, Darts etc from those two is popularity, ie the fact that the media covers it and so sanctions it as a 'sport'.
You certainly don't have to be an athlete to compete in these 'sports' and incidently you also you don't have to compete in any sport to be an athlete. Ballet dancers and free runners are phenomenal athletes, neither are sports.

Currently I agree Tiger is tops, Roger Federer is not far behind, if you asked the same question 12 years ago or so I would have said Michael Johnston
