PC Help

Morning chaps

You fellas are a clever bunch all round, and seem pretty clever with the old PCs and stuff so I am looking for a wee bit of advice.

My missus has got a PC in the house, its only about 2 years old, but its unbelievably slow, like you wouldnt believe. I have ran all sorts of Virus checkers and de-fragmented the hard drive and stuff and have came to the conclusion that, well, its a shit PC basically.

I'm not exactly a genius when it comes to this stuff, but I thought maybe I could just get her a faster processor and put in in her machine. How hard a job would that be? How much do things like that cost? Would it even help?

If you could help out fellas, or even point me in the right direction, it'd be appreciated.

Cheers

If your PC is only 2 years old the processor should be still pretty capable, RAM is the thing for speed when performing tasks.

It sounds as if something is hogging your resources.

For a snapshot of your PC's specs go here Belarc Advisor - Free Personal PC Audit

And d/load and install, this will let you see all your PC's resources and you can then advise anyone who asks what your specs are.

But if it's as slow as you say I'd go to Trend Micro HouseCall - Free Online Virus and Spyware Scan - Trend Micro UK and do an online scan for any nasties.

Hope this helps.

If you have tried all the stuff that the guys have said, id take it into pc world or somewhere like that, they usually clean it up for a small fee.

Or just get an Apple mac there just better

Anyway hope you get your problem fixed

no poblem m8, easy as fuck, just remove cover, you'll be looking for a circuit board with a thing like this>

this one is the circuit board>

it will be vertical this one has been removed, you just remove other one and slot in new ones, get at least 2gb, keep old one just in case you might need it later.

go to www.crucial.com to see what ram you have in pc.

have a look at this> YouTube - How to Install RAM to a Desktop Computer

I was looking on the Misco website and you can buy 2 x 2 gb of RAM, or alternatively 2 x 1gb. I think one of them was from that Crucial mob you said above. I have got the missus looking up the manual to check how much RAM the Motherboard can manage, then I'll see about getting some. I seen stuff like DDR, but they all seem to be DDR so that must be the right thing.

Cheers for the help so far, i'm a tool with all this stuff !!

Crucial will tell you what kind of RAM you can upgrade to. Alternatively use a USB stick as memory cache with Eboostr.

How does this Eboostr thing work then? I've actually got a 512mb Memory stick in the house somewhere, so that could come in handy !

Its cool CB, I ran the crucial program, and although it couldnt give me a recommendation it told me exactly what I needed to know, and along with your info on how to do it I am pretty confident we'll be laughing now.

Cheers for the help mate
