Robson: Good chance McGeady will leave, Celtic fans must miss Strachan

I fear Aiden McGeady will be next star to leave Celtic, says Barry Robson

Mar 19 2010 By Keith Jackson
BARRY ROBSON believes Tony Mowbray was determined to rip up Gordon Strachan's Celtic side - and has tipped Aiden McGeady to be the next big name to leave.
He spoke exclusively to Record Sport as his old club prepare for a 10-game push to save Mowbray's title hopes.
Two years ago Robson was hailed as the driving force behind Strachan's astonishing comeback when the Parkhead men rattled off seven straight league wins to clinch the title on the last day of the season.
But the Scotland player was part of Mowbray's first season clear-out when he left for Middlesbrough in January and now wonders whether or not the new men in Celtic's dressing room have it in them to mount a similar late run.
Robson admits he knew his time was up as soon as Mowbray set about dismantling Strachan's three-time title-winning squad.
And he fears star man McGeady may have already made the same decision to get out when the next transfer window opens.
Robson said: "It was evident to me that Tony wanted to do his own thing. He wanted to break up Gordon's team and build one of his own. It was pretty obvious but that's fair enough. That's his prerogative.
"I look back on the start of this season as an end of an era. Naka had left, Big Jan had gone and then the likes of Gary Caldwell and Big Mick moved on in January. I knew myself it was time for me to move on too.
"There's a good chance that Aiden will leave in the summer as well because he wants to try something different so it will be completely Tony's team soon. And it was obvious to me that was the way he wanted it."
Robson now suspects those Celtic fans who wanted rid of Strachan a year ago might have had a change of heart throughout Mowbray's first turbulent season.
He added: "I think, if we're being honest, the Celtic fans will be missing him too now because what he achieved in his time at the club was brilliant."

I wish all these twatts down at Middlesbrough would stop chiming in with their two cents worth about Celtic. You're not here anymore...get over it!!!

I personally won't be that bothered if McGeady leaves in the summer anyway. Oh, and Barry I've got some news for you..............I DO NOT MISS GORDON STRACHAN!!

It does add fuel to the idea that TM got rid of players basically because he wanted to break up the team, rather than necessarily for ability.

I dont see the problem in ripping up Strachans side.

It was proved last season it was rubbish.

What is with the constant sniping from ex players these days ?

These stories won't be making any pages in the newspapers down in the Tyne/Tees area so I doubt Middlesboro fans are concerned that their players seem to be occupied by what's going on at their previous club.. It does come across as like having a girlfriend who keeps going on about her ex boyfriend and needs to be told to drop it , but when you look deeper into it you can see it's the Daily Ranger that is to blame here.. Keith Jackson down on his hands and knees going around all the ex players with a begging bowl asking them "Please have you got anything negative to say about Celtic" only for the players to kind of reminisce about how much they enjoyed their time there , and when it's given the final draft hunification from the journalist it's put across in a way to give the impression it's a hatchet job from the players.. It's expected and goes with the territory when sitting 13 points behind the huns..

I agree Strachan wa great for us but it was his time to move on.

If Aiden was to leave I'd like to think it'd be with everyones good wishes but i think he might stick around and see if there is to be a new manager or not before making his decision

Mowbray has Responded.................................

Quote:
Meanwhile, Mowbray has rubbished reports that Aiden McGeady is the next high profile player to be heading for the exit door at Celtic Park.

Quotes in today’s press from former Parkhead midfielder Barry Robson slated Mowbray for the rapidness of the changes he made in the January transfer window and the Scotland international also claimed that McGeady would be next to leave.

The Republic of Ireland star has been linked with a move to the Premiership and the Bundesliga, but Mowbray believes that the winger will still be at Celtic this time next season.

“The bottom line is that it’s not worth commenting on, is it, really?” said Mowbray.
“It is just an ex-player who thinks that something might happen. I am not interested in what an ex-player thinks may happen.

“With all due respect, it doesn’t matter what a player thinks. I am the one and the club is the one who will decide what changes are made in the summer. I would suggest that Aiden isn’t going to be part of that.”

Don't miss Strachan.

I liked Robbo and McDonald but don't talk about Celtic like that. Take a leaf from Big Jans book, his interview was far more professional.

I disagree.. I think Aiden is happy playing for TM.. He said as much in his interviews that it's given him freedom to express rather than being told to stay stuck to the left touchline by his previous manager... The only way I can see Aiden leaving is if he gets a offer he can't refuse from a big club in a better league , or if he is forced out the door by the board.. I think him and TM have a good working relationship..

I'm disappointed. Always thought Robbo was different but I was wrong. I recommend all those ex-players to win the world cup or champions league before opening their mouths and acting like little whiny kids.

Yet another bitter ex player who after a couple of months in the footballing backwater of the championship is realising there is only one way you go when you leave Celtic - down!!

If all these tits had done their jobs properly they'd have won 4 in a row, there beloved wee gingy pal would probably still be here and they wouldn't be living in a shithole like middlesborough!!

Personally would sell McGeady in the summer anyway, anywhere near 10mil forba guy with no end product is deal of the century

I think you will find the Championship is better than the SPL.
