Very weak reply mate. You will only be happy when we spend upwards of £2m on a player, regardless of their quality?

i dont get how all of you can be complaining about this signing. Its clearly for his potential, and the small transfer fee makes it really low risk. As someone's mentioned in an earlier post, I'd rather this signing than another tommy g anyday

This is largely down to most of the Eircom League teams going proffesional.Looking at recent European results[e.g in the last 5 years] Eircom League teams have knocked out teams of the calibre of Hajduk Split[Then Croation champions],Djungardens,Gothenburg,Malmo and NEC Nijmegen as well as achieving creditable draws against Steau Bucharest,Lille,Deportivo La Coruna and PSG.Derry City also easily knocked Gretna out of the UEFA Cup a couple of years ago.
I'd wager that there is about the same number of former Eircom League players in the EPL than there is former SPL ones..

totally disagree. Every league has a top few teams that dominate. The SPL has two which is a proportionate number of big teams for a wee league in a wee country. The EPL has 4 or 5 but its a bigger league in a much bigger country. Its your top few teams that you judge a league by and if you dont have a couple of strong teams then the league is shite.
OK so a few good results recently but the SPL has had two Uefa cup finals in the last 6 years and a lot of moderate CL success too. Sorry but the SPL is not great but fact are facts, the SPL has quite a lot of glory under its belt for a wee country with 4 of the usual top 10 teams having been in a Euro final in the last 20 years. Thats nearly a Scottish side in a final every 5 years on average which is not bad.
As for number of players in the EPL, the old firm means that a lot of our best players can stay at home and make decent money and get Euro football and glory while the Eurcom league doesnt offer any real opportinites for a decent player so of course they will want out if they are good. So if they had more EPL players it means nothing.

BTW, I saw a good lot of clips of McCourt and although the level may not be the best, he looks a player. He actually reminds me of Geordie Best in his style which is not a bad compliment. He looks both skillful and with a good football brain which is something I think Aidan has not developed properly yet. I can see McCourt getting games on either wing.

Paddy can play on either wing as he is a two footed player. Against the lower teams in the SPL he will shine and gain confidence the more he gets on.
As someone who lived in the same street as Paddy when he was growing up he always had a ball at his feet and usually a Celtic top on his back as did most kids in our neighbourhood.
I don't know were the idea that Paddy didn't stand out in the eircom league came from as that is so far from the truth. He won the player of the year while Kevin Doyle, Hunt and O' Donovan were still playing here.
As for the difference in standards.........the top 4/5 teams in the eircom league would be on a par with the bottom half of the SPL.
Paddy has shone in some big games against decent opposition and I see no reason why he wont produce for the Celts.
Good luck Paddy and I hope you're on when I next get over to CP.

Personally I judge a league by the strength of their mid table teams.I don't think the big 4 are an accurate way to judge a league as the EPL as a whole, same as Celtic and Rangers are not representative of the quality of the SPL as a whole.Mainly because there is such a big gulf in quality between the top and mid table teams. There is a huge difference in quality between the EPL and the SPL and I believe this is better represented by the difference in quality between Tottenham and Falkirk for example than between Celtic and Manchester United.
I was taking the SPL as a league without Celtic and Rangers as they are the type of teams McCourt will be facing week in week out.So taking out Celtic and Rangers who are in a league of their own the difference between the SPL and the Eircom League is marginal. Also taking out the achievements of Celtic and Rangers then European records of SPL teams are not nearly as impressive.I know it might be unfair to just ignore Celtic and Rangers but I was originally replying to the comment that The SPL is a really big step up from the Eircom League when recent results have shown that it isn't that big.Facing Rangers and European teams is a big step up,facing Falkirk and Aberdeen is a much smaller one.
