Players who never made it..
Is there any players that you saw play at reserve or youth level over the years , who were simlpy outstanding and destined for greatness at Celtic but just never made the step up..
Im not thinking of injuries having been the deciding factor , more a case of players who just faded from great early promise..
I've never seen the reserves play but a couple of names stick out from the late 80's early 90's..
I used to watch the annual Scotland V England youth matches on terrestrial in the late 80's and remember seeing a guy called Sean Mcbride.. He had been likened to Paul Mcstay , sadly the comparisons never became reality.. Does anyone here have memories of him ?
Another guy (whom I never even saw on any level) but think he must have played first team football , was Dugald McCarrison.. Always remember reading this guys name in the Celtic View for scoring for the reserves.. At the time it seemed he was going to step up to first team and become the next McClair or Nicholas..
Don't know if these guys had injuries or how things went so wrong..
I could probably name a dozen other players over the last 20 years who've come through our youth teams to play first team football and dissapointed , but I'll leave that to others who may have seen them play week after week...

The one thing that sticks out about him for me , isn't his ego (or great opportunity) taking him out the door to Old Trafford but the Bayern Munich game where we were leading 1-0 and Martin takes of Big John and sticks on Liam... To say it made us a man short isn't doing justice..
Strange to think of a young player deciding that Celtic aren't big enough for him , but there you go..

Simon lynch was talked about but didnt make the step up. John paul Mcbride was another who was highly thought of but just never developed. Currently Michael Mglinchey looks not to be the wonderkid that he was so built up to be as a boy.

JP McBride had the talent without a doubt he just didn't and still doesn't have the attitude to go with it.

I think Miller got a bit of unfair stick when he left for Man U. I know Celtic and the fans felt he should have been loyal as the club suported him through his injuries and I was prety anoyed he didnt stay loyal. But it must have been very hard to say no to a move to old trafford especialy for a young lad maybe this oportunity might not have come his way again. It was far to early in his career to move there though and he has somewhat ruined his potential but I still think he is a class player and I know most fans wouldnt be happy but I would like to see him back at Celtis as I think he would have a lot to offer us.

I remember at the time that he broke through.. There was a couple other youngsters around.. maybe Brian Mclaughlin or a young Ross Wallace..
Anyway , Often when Charlie Nic was on the radio you'd hear him saying something like this - "It saddens me that in todays football we have a young player in the country with a great talent , and that player will remain nameless , but it's common knowledge in Glasgow football circles that this player who's been tipped for the very top , and is been monitored by Arsenal , has got a tab at (Insert famous Glasgow Bar) before he's even reached proper drinking age..
Might not have been Burchill he was talking about though..
