Who would be your ideal Centre back? (realistically)

In the long term, Balde isn't the answer.

A lot of names are being thrown about but my favourite choice would be Laursen. He scores goals and is a quality centre half.

Senderos wouldn't have the experience to make McManus stronger.

He is not a realistic option as their are a number of clubs sniffing about that can offer stupid wages. This includes Juventus so little chance we can compete.

Names are hard to come by at the moment but ffs their has got to be someone available that is better than Pressley and Caldwell. Surely our scouts have got someon identified.

In all honesty we need to look for the new vidic or new Mjalby. we cant buy or atract established players as they will get more money elsewere.

If i had to put a couple of names forward then I thought Spartak Moskow defended realy well against us earlier this season. especialy Martin Jiranek and Martin Stranzl. Also woldnt mind the two full backs who play for shaktar Srna and Fernadiniho.

Laursen would be a great shout, ticks all the right boxses in my opinion and as he's out of contract in nthe summer (what is it with O'neil and letting contracts run down) we could pick him up on either a bosman or fairly cheap in January.

Ellboy it's Mellberg that Juve want. Laursen has actually been tailking bout going back to Denmark most likely to Copenhagen, so im sure we could compete.

another guy i would love to see us go for is Sol Campbell as i think he'd be ideal however money would maybe be a problem so maybe not to realistic. i know they get a shit load more tv money than us but god it's a sad day when a club as huge as ours can't compete with Portsmouth.

You obviously haven't read that brilliant Times article which pointed out that Portsmouth one of the top teams in the World can't get into Europe yet crappy wee teams like Celtic can

Not one for speculating on new players I always end up disappointed mainly due to the fact that Celtic (wisely) don't wish to fork out stupid cash. I await the Daily Ranger or The Hun getting it exclusively wrong as well

As has already been said Laursen is the best and cheapest option. If Celtic don't even make an effort to sign him I'll be very annoyed.
I also think Bouma would be a good signing. He is a better LB than Naylor and a better CB than Pressley/Caldwell.He is also out of contract in the summer.

I know he'd be a better option than Pressley but you really want the club to spend £1.5-£2m to bring a guy out of retirement..
No chance.

There's a great young American/Bosnian Serb defender Neven Subotic who plays for Mainz in the German II Bundesliga. Very large and strong (193 cm/6'4"), he's forced himself into their starting line-up. I haven't been able to see him, we don't get that league on TV over here, but I read that the Germans and the German press were very upset they couldn't find a way for him to suit up for the national team. He is apparently trying to decide if he will play for the US, Bosnia, Serbia, or Montenegro as he has had all of their national teams after him. The only youth set-up he has participated in is the US, having been capped by the U-20 and U-17 teams. Unfortunately, he has said some strange things which have left many American fans wondering if he'll continue this path.

He recently declined a US call-up, but only because he wanted to play for Germany in a few years. After the game, he learned that because he played for the US U-17 team before becoming a German citizen, this was no longer a possibility. I don't think he'd cost too much, and probably wouldn't ask for very high wages.

That's a good shout.. 30 years old , bags of experience , can play left back or centre half and has only featured twice for Man Utd this season.. I know we've brought up the names of about 5 or 6 Man Utd players on various threads (Im the most guilty of it) but agree that Silvestre is probably the closest to be shown the door at Man Utd and could be just what we're looking for..

I heard that Juve was interested in both of them. If I am wrong I stand corected. However Laursen is no spring chicken and it would not be a long term option. Maybe 1 or 2 seasons. As for Sol campbell he would be ideal but I think hes on silly money a pompy It always helps to have a rich russian owner with a bottomless pocket..
